Safe Return to Play

This league will play outdoors, where, experts say, transmission of COVID-19 is much less likely.

Per Phase 3 requirements, team sport leagues cannot exceed a MAXIMUM OF 50 PARTICIPANTS. That means that FCSSC must ensure that Spikeball have a max roster of 2 players and are assigned to a pool with a maximum of 23 other teams (24 teams total, so that the total participants in the pool does not exceed 50 players). Teams will only play the other teams in their pool for the duration of the season.

All players must follow the at-courts signage and check in at the sanitizing station upon arrival.

There must be NO CONTACT between players at any time. All participants must stay 6 feet apart at all times, including before, during and after games.

All participants are asked to wear a face mask upon arrival and departure from the courts as turnover can be a busy time with lots of people in the same space at the same time. Masks may be removed during game play.

Teams are asked to set up team "beaches" on the big grassy area north of the courts, rather than using the picnic tables that may be present at the courts. Spread out as much as possible.

All teams must assign a Health Ambassador who will monitor and assist members of his/her own team to follow the rule modifications, as well as FCSSC's Safe Return to Play Guidelines.

The on-site Game Coordinators will have hand sanitizer available. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own.

All participants are asked to bring their own personal equipment, like sweat towel, and water bottle. FCSSC will provide all Spikeball equipment.

All other Safe Return to Play Guidelines must also be followed. Please read.

Spikeball Rules

SPIRIT POINTS: An integral part of all the sports that the Forest City Sport & Social Club offers. It is based on the primary focus of the FCSSC, which is sportsmanship and to have FUN...NOT on competitive and aggressive sport.

General Rules:

  1. All players except the receiver must begin the point at least 6 feet from the net.
  2. The receiver may stand at any desired distance
  3. Once the server strikes the ball, players may go anywhere they choose.
  4. Possession changes when the ball contacts the net.
  5. Each team has up to 3 touches per possession.
  6. Determine a serving order which alternates players from the two teams (e.g. Player 3 follows Player 1, etc.).
  7. To equalize sun and wind effects, rotate starting positions 90 degrees counter-clockwise every 5 points if desired.

Scoring:

  1. Spikeball is played using rally scoring; points can be won by the serving or receiving team.
  2. Games are typically played to 15, or 21.
  3. Games must be won by two points unless otherwise agreed upon or specified.
  4. The rally ends and a point is awarded when:
  5. The ball contacts the ground or otherwise isn't returned onto the net within 3 touches.
  6. The ball is hit directly into the rim at any time, unless it's the first serve.
  7. The ball bounces and falls back onto the net or rim.
  8. The ball clearly rolls across the net

Serving:

  1. If the receiving team wins the point, the next designated player serves according to the initial sequence. Otherwise, the server switches places with his/her partner and serves to the other receiving team member.
  2. The receiving team sets their position first. The server stands 180 degrees across the designated receiver--the only player allowed to field the serve.
  3. Serves may be struck with any amount of force; short serves are allowed.
  4. If a server serves two faults, the receiving team wins the point. Violation of ANY of the following rules is a fault:
  5. The server must toss the ball upward at least 4 inches.
  6. If the server tosses the ball, he/she must hit it. Dropping, catching, or swinging at and missing a toss all count as a fault.

Rallies:

  1. Touches must alternate between teammates. Consecutive touches by one player result in a loss of a point.
  2. The ball must be contacted cleanly, not caught, lifted, or thrown. Players may not hit the ball with two hands, even if placed together "volleyball style".
  3. Players may use any individual part of their body to hit the ball.
  4. After the serve, any unusual bounce (i.e. pocket) that does not contact the rim is legal and playable.
  5. A shot which lands on the net, rolls into the rim and then off the net (i.e. roll-up) is played as a pocket, not a direct rim hit.
  6. If teams cannot determine the legality of a hit, replay the point.

Infractions:

  1. Remember: Player safety is paramount
  2. Defending players must make an effort not to impede the offending team's possession or play on the ball.
  3. If an offender collides with a defender, or a defender's position prevents a makeable offensive play on the ball, the infracted player may call "hinder" to force a replay of the point.
