Safe Return to Play

This sport will take place outdoors.

This league will be limited to 4 participants per game, far below the 10 person gathering limit.

All participants must stay 6 feet apart at all times, including before, during and after their games. Players must intentionally play back from the net to avoid contact with another player.

All participants are asked to wear a face mask prior to and after games for the protection of others.

The Game Coordinator will have hand sanitizer available and disinfectant spray for the ball. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own sanitizer.

All participants are asked to bring their own water bottle. No sharing.

Players must use the FCSSC provided ball that will be sanitized and disinfected at very regular intervals.

All other Safe Return to Play Guidelines must also be followed. Please read.

What to Expect

Come out for 4-weeks to try a popular individualized twist on Volleyball! Crossnet is "Volleyball meets Four Square". The ball could come from any of three directions and a soft touch makes all the difference!

This program is a perfect solo sport option to warm up while we wait for team sports to return.

Four (naturally separated) individual players will rally for fun and move up or down the "ladder" to try to obtain and stay in the top "square" as long as possible.

This is not a league and as such no standings will be kept - just fun rally play.

All games are 55 mins long, to allow for sanitizing of equipment.

Location All sessions are planned to take place on the SE green space at *UPDATED* the YMCA Wortley Village Headquarters in Old South. Sessions run rain or shine (except thunderstorms).

Spirit of the Program Try something new! Great practice, and a fun alternative, for volleyball players looking to prep for STEP 2 team sports.

Class Size

A minimum of 4 participants is required to run the program. League size will be capped at 8 participants.

Equipment

Participants must bring their own water bottle, no sharing. Players must use a FCSSC ball to ensure ball is consistently sanitized.

Participant Information All paid participants will receive detailed information about the program after registration closes.
Age & Waivers All participants MUST be 19 years of age or older, no exceptions. All participants must comply with FCSSC's Safe Return to Play Guidelines for the safety of all members, staff, and facility/program providers.
All participants MUST sign a waiver before playing, no exceptions. Signing the waiver on-line is super easy, just follow the steps during registration & checkout.

1. Pre-Game – Spirit Points, Equipment, Game Time, Defaults, Fields    

Play that is competitive, overly aggressive, rough and/or unsportsmanlike such as pushing, shoving, elbowing, shouldering, tripping, hacking, slashing, sliding, tackling, ball blasting, chirping, name calling, threats and intimidation, is prohibited and will not be tolerated by FCSSC.  FCSSC IS FIRST-AND-FOREMOST-FOR-FUN. ANY ROUGH OR PHYSICAL PLAY WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE EXPULSION FROM THE GAME, THE LEAGUE, THE CLUB AND/OR ALL OF THE ABOVE.  All players should go out of their way to avoid contact with other players and/or eliminate actions or behaviours that could jeopardize player safety.  If accidental contact occurs it is expected that players will apologize for that contact, ensure everyone is alright and stop the game to seek appropriate help as required.  This rule supersedes all others!

Spirit Points: An integral part of all the sports that the Forest City Sport & Social Club offers. It is based on the primary focus of the FCSSC, which is sportsmanship and to have FUN...NOT on competitive and aggressive sport. 

Equipment/Set-Up: FCSSC Game Co-ordinators will provide volleyballs for each game and will set-up the net(s) for the game.  Teams are welcome to bring their own balls for warm-up and practice.  In addition, FCSSC’s Game co-ordinator will keep score when possible (ie. Only one game in the gym at a time).  If the FCSSC Game’s co-ordinator is unable to keep score, we ask that each team select a player to assist in keeping score.

Game Time/Default:

  • Please arrive 15 minutes early so that you can start your games on time.
  • Each match is a best-of-three games format.
  • Games do not use a rally-point scoring system; points can only be scored when having the serve
  •  Games 1, 2, and 3 are played to 11 points; but teams must win by two points (to a capped limit of 15)
  • A full team consists of 2 players, with a minimum of 1 female • The minimum number of players required to avoid a default is: 1 player
  • A default will occur if any team cannot field a squad by 10 minutes after the official start time. The second game of the match will be defaulted 20 minutes after the official start time and the third and final game of the match will be defaulted 30 minutes after the official start time (e.g. a team that defaults the first game, can still play the second and third games, providing that enough players eventually arrive). A team can play with a minimum of 1 person, as long as one (1) player is a female and one (1) player is a male. Captains may agree to waive the rules regarding minimum people but this should be decided before the game starts. IF IT IS AGREED THAT THE GAME COUNTS, IT COUNTS!

2. In Game – General Rules 

General Rules:

  1. To begin playing CROSSNET, players first designate the four quadrants and assign players a number 1-4.
  2. Rallies begin by the 4th square serving diagonally to the 2nd square and then the ball is returned to any other square.
  3.  Only one hit is allowed per return.
  4. Points are only accumulated in the 4th square and players keep their points when eliminated

 

Boundries:

  1. If a player lands the ball on any outside boundary, it is considered in play, and the player in that square is eliminated. However, if the ball lands outside of the outer boundary, the player that last hit the ball is eliminated.
  2. Inside boundaries do not dictate if a ball is in or out. If a ball travels over the net and into a players square they are responsible for returning and playing the ball.
  3. Players may hit the ball only once with their hands to return the ball over the net. We define “hands” as any area between a player’s wrists and fingertips, including the back of the hands. Players may not catch, carry, or hold the ball at any time during play.

3. Post-Game – Score Reporting, Spirit Points, Departure

Discrepancies: All games are self-refereed. Any disputes will be discussed amongst the two team captains. Please play honestly and call your own infractions (in the kitchen, net, etc). If a dispute cannot be settled the point should be re-served

Score Reporting:  Captains from each team are responsible for reporting or confirming game scores within 48 hours of the completion of the game.   Scores can be reported or confirmed via our website at www.fcssc.ca.

Spirit Points: Captains are also responsible for submitting a “Spirit” score for the opposing team each week.  This is done when the score is reported or confirmed on the FCSSC website.  Spirit points allow you to score your opponent based on your experience playing against them.  You can score them based on how fun they were to play against, did they show good sportsmanship, did they follow and know the rules, did they arrive on time etc.   All teams should shoot for PERFECT Spirit Points! 

Departure:  Each week after your game, it is important to leave the court in a timely manner.   Teams could be playing after you and will need to get their game started on time.   It is also possible that the facility could be closing upon the completion of your game and all staff and FCSSC members will need to depart the building at that time.
