Teams normally would not finish at the same time. Winners stay on and split up/or currently partners may want to stay together, and sitting teams comes on.
Rotations go quickly once first game is done.
Play that is competitive, overly aggressive, rough and/or unsportsmanlike, such as pushing, shoving, elbowing, shouldering, tripping, hacking, slashing, sliding, tackling, ball blasting, chirping, name calling, threats and intimidation, is prohibited and will not be tolerated by FCSSC. FCSSC IS FIRST-AND-FOREMOST-FOR-FUN. ANY ROUGH OR PHYSICAL PLAY WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE EXPULSION FROM THE GAME, THE LEAGUE, THE CLUB AND/OR ALL OF THE ABOVE. All players should go out of their way to avoid contact with other players and/or eliminate actions or behaviours that could jeopardize player safety. If accidental contact occurs it is expected that players will apologize for that contact, ensure everyone is alright and stop the game to seek appropriate help as required. THIS RULE SUPERSEDES ALL OTHERS!
Spirit Points: An integral part of all the sports that the Forest City Sport & Social Club offers. It is based on the primary focus of the FCSSC, which is sportsmanship and to have FUN...NOT on competitive and aggressive sport.
Equipment/Set-Up: FCSSC Game Coordinators will provide balls and pickleball paddles for each game. Teams are welcome to bring their own, if they own them. In addition, FCSSC’s Game Coordinator will keep score when possible (ie. Only one game in the gym at a time). If the FCSSC Game Coordinator is unable to keep score, we ask that each team select a player to assist in keeping score.
1. The team that starts with the first serve of the game will only get one service game to start; each team receives two serves per possession thereafter.
2. The serving player should announce the score and serve number before each serve.
- Announce the serving team’s score first, followed by the opponents score, and then the server number. (Example: 13-10-2 indicates that the score is 13-10 for the serving team, and they are on their second serve)
3. The serving team always starts with the player in the right-hand-service-court.
4. Players alternate serves between service-courts after each point.
5. All serves must be underhand, and contacted below the waist (not on a bounce).
6. There is a maximum of 5 consecutive points allowed per server. (Each team can only strike the ball once before it has to pass over the net. The ball must be returned before bouncing twice on the floor.)
7. Double bounce rule: Each team must play their first shot of the rally off of the bounce or as a ground-stroke (no volleys).
8. Non-volley zone: Also known as the “Kitchen” extends 7-feet from each side of the net; players can only enter the area to make a ground-stroke, or play a ball landing in the non-volley zone.
9. Players are to call their own faults.
10. Common faults include:
- The serve touches the net and lands in the non-volley zone.
- Double-hit: the ball is caught and slung during the execution of a stroke (Double bounce rule violation).
- Non-volley zone violation - “Stay out of the kitchen!”
- Crossing the plane of the net with a body part, paddle or clothing (exception is the follow-through of a racquet where contact is made on the returning player’s side of the net)
11. A total of 5 combined points must be played in a game for the result to count. If the GC is required to call ‘time’ on a match, finish the current point. The score will stand as-is, unless the combined score in the current game has not reached a total of 5 points, in which case the game will not count. Regular season ties are allowed. Playoff ties are not allowed. One additional point must be played to determine a winner.
12. Teams can use any suitable means to determine who gets to serve first in Game 1
o Service and sides will alternate between teams for Game 2
o If a 3rd game is required, teams must re-determine who gets serve or side
o Teams will switch sides in Game 3 once one team has reached 5 points
13. The team that starts the game with the serve will start on their 2nd serve; they only get one service game to start
o After this initial service game is played out, each team will always have both players serve during each remaining service game
14. The serving team always starts the game with the player in the right-hand-service-court
o If a point is scored, the server moves to the left side (odd court) and serves to the diagonally opposite court
o Players on the serving side continue to move from the right to left or left to right each time a point is scored
15. For the serving rotations that follow, serves will always start in the right-hand court, but the player serving first will vary
o Whoever is on the right side (depending on the score) when the team gets the serve back is the first server for that service turn only
o When the first server of that game is on the right side of the court, that team’s score should be even
▪ If this is not the case, then either the players are positioned on the wrong side of the court or the called score is inaccurate
16. Players on the serving team alternate between the service-courts after each point
17. A maximum of 5 consecutive points are allowed per server RECEIVING THE SERVE
18. To start the game, the receiving team must decide which court / side each of them will receive serve in. After the initial service game, players receive serve from the court / side they last served from
19. The receiving team does not alternate positions when a point is scored by the serving team SERVICE
20. Both players on the serving team must be behind the baseline at the time of the serve
21. All serves must be underhand, and contacted below the waist (not on a bounce)
22. The ball must land in the diagonal court, between the non-volley zone and the boundary lines
23. The serve is a let if:
o The served ball touches the net, and lands in the correct service-court area
o When it is a let serve, that particular serve does not count and the server shall re-serve
24. The receiving team makes the line calls. If there is a dispute, re-serve with no point awarded
25. Double Bounce Rule: Each team must play their first shot off of the bounce, or as a ground-stroke
o This means that the receiving team must let the serve bounce, and that the serving team must let the return bounce before playing it
o Once these two bounces have occurred, the ball can either be volleyed or played off a single bounce
25. Non-Volley Zone: Also known as the “kitchen,” extends out approximately 7 feet from each side of the net
o A player cannot step on the non-volley zone line or into the zone itself when making a volley (hitting the ball in the air)
o A player cannot enter the non-volley zone due to forward momentum after hitting a volley shot, even if contact with the ball was made outside of the zone
o Players can enter the non-volley zone any other time, as long as they do not make contact with a ball in the air
o Players can enter the non-volley zone to make a ground-stroke, or play a ball that bounces in the zone
VIOLATIONS AND FAULTS Players are expected to know the Pickleball rules and call their own faults. If an obvious fault is missed, a player on the opposing team may politely point this out, assuming that their opponent either does not know the rule or missed their own fault. Generally, teams should NOT call faults against their opponents.
Discrepancies: All games are self-refereed. Any disputes will be discussed amongst the two team captains. Please play honestly and call your own infractions (in the kitchen, net, etc). If a dispute cannot be settled the point should be re-served.
Score Reporting (if applicable): Captains from each team are responsible for reporting or confirming game scores within 48 hours of the completion of the game. Scores can be reported or confirmed via our website at www.fcssc.ca.
Spirit Points (if applicable): Captains are also responsible for submitting a “Spirit” score for the opposing team each week. This is done when the score is reported or confirmed on the FCSSC website. Spirit points allow you to score your opponent based on your experience playing against them. You can score them based on how fun they were to play against - did they show good sportsmanship, did they follow and know the rules, did they arrive on time etc. All teams should shoot for PERFECT Spirit Points! Departure: Each week after your game, it is important to leave the court in a timely manner. Please wipe down your paddles with provided disinfectant and return to front desk or leave for next set of players. Teams could be playing after you and will need to get their game started on time. It is also possible that the facility could be closing upon the completion of your game and all staff and FCSSC members will need to depart the building at that time.
All games will be played at Total Tennis, inside the bubble at Greenhills Golf Course in Lambeth.
